Chinatown Murder Shock: Gunman Caught After Bizarre Drive-By Killing
Alphonso Joyner, 23, was slammed with murder charges after a shocking shooting in Chicago’s Chinatown. Joyner appeared in court Thursday for a bond hearing and was ordered held without bail. Prosecutors painted a chilling picture of the attack. His public defender insists he’s innocent.
Deadly Drive-By Attack in Chinatown
Joyner faces serious charges: murder, aggravated use of a deadly weapon, and possession of a revoked FOID card. The victim, 71-year-old Woom Sing Tse, was walking on West 23rd Street when a car pulled up beside him. The driver opened fire but missed the first shots.
As Tse tried to run, the shooter fired again, hitting him. The gunman then stepped out, stood over Tse’s body, and fired more shots before speeding off.
Fast Police Response Nets Suspect
Police received a quick tip-off with a vehicle description and license plate. They tracked the car on the Kennedy Expressway, stopped it, and arrested Joyner without trouble. Multiple videos captured the shooting, and a “ghost gun” was found beside Joyner in the car. Officers also found gunshot residue on his clothes.
Motive Still a Mystery
“I cannot say why this happened… sometimes people just do evil people things,” said Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy.
The Chinatown community played a vital role, providing surveillance footage and evidence that helped crack the case, representatives say. The Chinatown Chamber of Commerce and local groups were praised for their swift cooperation.
