James Clarke’s high-speed joyrides end in jail after two wild chases in stolen Audis

60mph Police Chase Through Narrow Streets

James Clarke, 41, was first arrested on June 17 after leading cops on a hair-raising 60mph chase through the tight streets of Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The police were tipped off that Clarke was wanted for burglaries in Derbyshire.

During the pursuit, Clarke flew over speed bumps, weaved dangerously through traffic, and ran a red light—forcing other drivers to swerve for safety. He eventually ditched the stolen white Audi on Main Road, Ravenshead, and was caught trying to scale a fence.

Second Arrest After Carjacking in Mansfield

Just five weeks later, Clarke was back behind the wheel of another white Audi—this time stolen from a home in Mansfield. The terrified house occupants called 999 after hearing noises and spotting the intruder drive off.

Police found Clarke minutes later in Westfield Lane. He sped off again but crashed into parked cars and a garden wall while reversing to escape, then tried to flee on foot. Officers quickly caught up and detained him shortly after.

Evidence Found in the Stolen Car

In the abandoned Audi, officers discovered a stolen iPad and handbag, linking Clarke to the burglary.

Jailed for Three Years & Driving Ban

At Nottingham Crown Court on November 2, Clarke, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to burglary, two counts of dangerous driving, and aggravated vehicle taking. He was sentenced to three years behind bars and banned from driving for 30 months.

“Clarke’s mindless behaviour could have had fatal consequences,” said Detective Constable David Smith. “Both chases were foolish attempts to evade capture. Our officers did a fantastic job arresting him without anyone seriously hurt.”

“Burglary, car theft, and driving offences are taken very seriously by Nottinghamshire Police, and we will always act against offenders.”
