Brutal Bottle Attack in Margate Leaves Man Dead
In the early hours of Saturday, 12 October 2019, 44-year-old Mark Miles was fatally attacked at a house party in Sandhurst Place, Margate. The tragedy unfolded after Mark confronted Richard McAuley over inappropriate comments made towards women at the gathering.
Bottle Smashing Rage Ends in Murder
Eyewitnesses say McAuley grabbed a bottle, smashed it, and used the jagged glass to viciously attack Mark. Despite efforts to help, Mark sustained fatal neck injuries and died at the scene. A woman trying to intervene was also hurt, suffering an arm injury inflicted by McAuley.
Murderer Found Guilty After Quick Jury Verdict
Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance rushed to the scene, but the damage was done. McAuley, 23, from Cliftonville, was arrested and charged with murder the very next day.
Denial gave way to a swift conviction after a five-day trial at Maidstone Crown Court. The jury took just over an hour to find McAuley guilty of murder and wounding with intent.
Detective Inspector Ross Gurden said: “That night had been one of socialising and friendship for the victim, until McAuley arrived and things took a truly tragic turn. In a violent rage, McAuley attacked the unarmed man – then fled, leaving his victim to die.”
“My thoughts are with Mr Miles’ family who have had to face the devastating consequences of losing a loved one. I thank them for their strength and support throughout the investigation and trial.”
Sentencing Set for Next Week
McAuley faces sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday, 22 July. The community waits for justice in a case that shook Margate to its core.
