Drug Dealer Mazhar Abbas Slapped with £108k Asset Seizure
Mazhar Abbas, 47, is behind bars serving 12-and-a-half years for trafficking 40 kilos of heroin across West Yorkshire. He was rounded up in November 2017 during Operation Rangeland, a major crackdown by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit.
Judge Cracks Down on Property Linked to Drug Profits
On Friday 26 March 2021, Bradford Crown Court dismissed Abbas’s claim that his home belonged to a family member. Instead, the judge slapped a hefty confiscation order of £108,881 on him under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
The court also imposed a Compliance Order demanding full transparency if Abbas tries to sell the property. Any dodgy dealings would be treated as contempt of court, adding more heat on the convicted trafficker.
Crime Unit Warns Others: Pay Up or Face the Consequences
“Abbas played his part in bringing misery to the streets of West Yorkshire,” said Ramona Senior, head of the Regional Economic Crime Unit. “Now, as well as serving a significant sentence, he has lost his assets. This shows we are dead serious about confiscating money from convicted drug dealers.” “Any others thinking they can get away with it should think again.”
