Serving Cop Jailed for Sexual Assault on 12-Year-Old Girl

Steven McGibbon subjected a vulnerable 12-year-old girl to a sickening sexual assault, leaving her powerless to stop him. The brave youngster told her mum before confiding in officers, leading to McGibbon’s arrest and charges.

Police Officer Found Guilty After Five-Day Trial

McGibbon faced two charges of sexually assaulting a girl under 13. He denied all offences but was convicted of sexual assault by penetration at Sheffield Crown Court on 14 December 2023. He was cleared of sexual assault by touching.

Victim’s Courage Leads to Conviction

“McGibbon’s victim was left absolutely traumatised by his despicable actions,” said Detective Constable Kay Morgan, who led the investigation. “Her courageous testimony made this conviction possible.”

McGibbon refused to admit guilt, forcing the victim and her family to relive the trauma through the trial.

Five Years Behind Bars and Indefinite Ban

The 49-year-old, formerly of Doncaster, was sentenced last Friday (8 March) to five years in prison. He was also handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), barring any contact with children under 16.

“I cannot commend enough the bravery of the victim and the support of her family,” added DC Morgan. “We share their relief that McGibbon is now behind bars, and hope this helps them heal.”

DC Morgan made it clear: “We will not tolerate violence against children. We’ll use all resources to bring offenders like McGibbon to justice.”
