Shropshire Cop Jailed for Abuse of Power and Police Corruption
Rhett Wilson, 27, from Shropshire, has been slammed with a 34-month prison sentence after being found guilty of perverting the course of justice and police corruption. The former West Mercia officer exploited his role to start inappropriate relationships, betraying public trust.
Rapid Rise, Rapid Fall
- Wilson joined West Mercia Police in April 2019.
- By December 2019, he was abusing his position for sexual gain.
- A referral led to his arrest on March 10, 2020.
- He endured a 48-hour interview before being suspended on March 12.
- Wilson quit the force in July 2020 amid the probe.
Serious Breach of Trust
“Rhett Wilson abused his position as a police officer to start relationships, and it is likely his victims had no idea what he was doing was wrong,” said Deputy Chief Constable Alex Murray. “The public must have faith that police officers will act with integrity and will not abuse their authority. Wilson’s actions may seriously erode that trust, as his exploitative behaviour will not be tolerated by West Mercia Police.”
The West Mercia Police Professional Standards Department uncovered Wilson’s misconduct during their internal investigation, swiftly bringing the corrupt officer to justice. His sentence sends a clear message: abusing police powers will lead to prison time.
