MMA Fighter’s Night Out Ends in Violence
Aftab Miah, 37, from Hove, has been locked up for 21 months after viciously attacking a man in a late-night street brawl. The trained mixed martial artist pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to causing grievous bodily harm without intent.
Bar Fight Escalates to Brutal Street Assault
It all kicked off around 11pm on May 21 at a bar in Second Avenue, Hove. Miah and his 24-year-old victim were seen arguing before Miah landed a punch to the man’s face. Both groups were kicked out, and the victim headed across the road, while Miah disappeared from the scene.
An hour later, as the victim walked along Second Avenue, witnesses saw Miah jump out of a passing car and deliver a savage, unprovoked punch to the man’s face. The victim hit the floor hard, fracturing his skull and suffering a brain bleed.
Justice Served After CCTV and Witness IDs
The brutal attack was caught on CCTV, and police moved quickly, arresting Miah the next day. Four out of five witnesses identified him in a line-up. He was slapped with a £190 victim surcharge alongside his jail term.
Police Condemn Violence, Praise Sentencing
Detective PC James Botting said: “This was a callous, unprovoked attack in which Aftab Miah left his victim lying in the street with serious injuries. Miah has a number of previous convictions for violent crimes and this custodial sentence has taken a violent offender off our streets. “Violence of any kind has no place in our city and we will continue working to tackle violent behaviour through enforcement and alongside our partner agencies to try to steer people away from violence.”
