Violent Shop Attack Ends in Jail for Wellingborough Man
Kurt Collins sparked a violent rampage after a heated argument with a shop staffer on Snargate Street on the evening of Sunday, 16 September 2023.
Argument Escalates Outside Shop
Following the row inside the store, the shopkeeper chased Collins outside. While Collins sat in his van and the shopkeeper stood on the pavement, tensions boiled over.
Collins suddenly pulled over and began smashing the shop’s property using a metal levelling edge he grabbed from his van.
Assault Leaves Staffer Seriously Injured
When the staff member confronted Collins again, the 35-year-old lashed out, striking him with both the metal tool and a bat.
The victim suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to a London hospital for emergency treatment.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest and Jail
Kent Police quickly identified and arrested Collins, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, the same night.
At Canterbury Crown Court, Collins was found guilty of unlawful wounding and criminal damage. On Friday 19 April 2024, he was sentenced to four years behind bars, including two months for damaging the shop.
Detective Constable Martin Aird said: “This was an extremely violent attack prompted by a petty argument with a man who was just doing his job. Collins left the victim lying on the pavement and the consequences of the assault could have been even more serious had it not been for the work of doctors and medics.”
“I am pleased Collins was quickly arrested and has now been jailed for the assault. I hope this case gives the victim some reassurance as he continues his recovery.”
