Man Jailed for Spraying Bleach in Kebab Shop Brawl
Andrew Maloney, 53, was slapped with a 16-month jail sentence at Canterbury Crown Court on Thursday, May 19, after admitting possession of an offensive weapon, affray, and criminal damage.
Brawl Erupts in Lydd Kebab Shop
The incident unfolded in the early hours of April 9, 2022, on Lydd’s High Street. Maloney, from The Derings, stormed into a local takeaway and started arguing with staff and customers.
After being kicked out, Maloney didn’t stop there — he sprayed a corrosive substance directly at the group inside, leaving one man in pain with injuries to his face and eyes.
Police and Firefighters On The Scene
Officers quickly tracked Maloney down nearby and found the bleach bottle he used. Kent Fire and Rescue Service tested the substance, confirming it was a powerful alkali: sodium hypochlorite.
Maloney enraged officers further by abusing them and kicking the police car’s gear stick, causing damage.
Officer Praises Fast Police Action
“Use of corrosive substances to injure or threaten others is totally unacceptable and this case shows we will take action against those who do so,” said PC Sophia Lateu, Kent Police’s investigating officer.
“I am pleased the quick actions of officers on the night, and the swift investigation that followed, has led to this offender being jailed just over a month after these offences took place.”
