Voice Gives Knife-Wielding Burglar Away
A Tonbridge burglar with a knife has been jailed for seven years after a victim recognised his voice during a terrifying raid.
Trio Storm Flat with Knives
Oliver Bowles, 22, was part of a masked three-man gang who burst into a flat on Trench Road at 8.45pm on January 28, 2020. The villains forced their way inside, waving large kitchen knives and demanding cash from the occupants.
Despite balaclavas, one victim identified Bowles by his voice, screamed his name, and told him to leave. The gang made off with around £290 in cash and some tobacco.
Quick Arrest After Victim Recognition
Police tracked Bowles to his home on Shipbourne Road. Officers seized stolen tobacco and clothing matching the suspects’ outfits. CCTV revealed Bowles and an accomplice shopping with the stolen cash shortly after the break-in.
Bowles confessed to being on the CCTV but denied taking part in the break-in, claiming he was at home. He pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and possession of a knife at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced on June 12.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery, Investigation Continues
“This was a targeted and planned burglary during which these men subjected their victims to a truly terrifying ordeal,” said DC David Evans of the Chief Constable’s Crime Squad.
“Bowles quickly realised one of the victims was known to him and tried to keep a low profile, but it was too late. He will now serve a significant prison sentence as we continue to hunt others involved.”
