Knife-Wielding Robber Marcus Piper Locked Up for 13 Years
Marcus Piper, 27, a drifter with no fixed address, has been slammed with a hefty 13-year jail sentence at Basildon Crown Court. His crime spree rocked Southend in 2020, with a string of robberies, an attempted robbery, and an aggravated burglary over just three months.
Public Tips Nail Notorious Knife Gangster
Police detectives launched a relentless hunt for Piper, who threatened small business owners and taxi drivers with a knife. After a public appeal via social media and Crimestoppers—with a sweet reward on offer—tip-offs from locals helped cops track Piper down. The Southend Proactive Team swooped on him on 21 October last year.

Sentenced to Serve and Warning to Knife Carriers
Piper faces a combined sentence of 13 years for aggravated burglary, plus concurrent terms of four years for each taxi robbery and six-and-a-half years for each newsagent attack. He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before parole.
“Piper continually targeted people who were just doing their job during a really difficult time for small businesses and those who are self-employed. I know they suffered significant losses because of his greed,” said Detective Inspector Steve Franklin of Southend CID.
“Carrying a knife is not acceptable and, as we’ve seen in this case, there will be significant consequences if you’re found to be doing so. This violence is the reason that Piper will serve an additional five years on licence.”
“If you’re in a similar situation, it’s not too late to turn your life around. Please bring your knives to your local knife bin, and reach out to charities like Fearless who can help you get to a better place.”
The total haul from Piper’s crimes is estimated at around £2,500. His violent rampage has come to an end, but the lasting scars on his victims remain.
