Ex-lover jailed for passing on HIV after hiding diagnosis
Secret HIV status puts ex in danger
Jermaine Scott was diagnosed with HIV back in 2005 and was on medication to reduce the risk of passing it on. But when he and his ex rekindled their relationship in summer 2009, Scott wasn’t taking his meds regularly. Even worse, he never told her about his status and they had unprotected sex.
Suspicion leads to shocking discovery
The victim grew wary of Scott’s erratic behaviour. In October 2009 the couple visited a sexual health clinic, where Scott gave false details to staff. Not long after, the woman tested positive for HIV, ending their relationship.
Justice delayed but not denied
Scott refused to cooperate with police, and there was initially not enough evidence to charge him. He was deported from the UK in November 2011 after it was revealed he was here illegally.
New evidence sparks comeback
The victim pushed for the case to reopen. Medical experts confirmed she caught HIV during her time with Scott, linking their virus strains genetically. In 2019, the CPS charged Scott with grievous bodily harm. An extradition warrant followed, and Scott returned to the UK in November 2022.
He was sentenced to three years in prison for knowingly passing on HIV.
