Portsmouth Man Jailed for Rape and Sexual Assault Caught on Camera

Stuart Cosgrave Sentenced to Over 10 Years

Stuart Lionel Cosgrave, 48, of Fyning Street, Portsmouth, was sentenced to ten and a half years behind bars at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, June 17. He will also serve an additional five years on licence after admitting charges of rape and sexual assault against a woman in her 40s.

Disturbing Evidence Found on Phones

The victim had been in a relationship with Cosgrave back in 2018 and had previously reported him for burglary and harassment. When police arrested Cosgrave, they seized two of his phones. Forensic detectives uncovered multiple videos showing sexual assaults. The victim identified herself in the footage, which led to his charges.

Police Praise Victim’s Courage

“First and foremost, we would like to commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting these offences to police,” said Detective Constable Vicki Bousfield and Detective Sergeant Beth Marshall, who led the investigation.

“We would not have gotten this conviction and sentence today if it hadn’t been for her bravery. We hope this outcome provides her some closure, knowing Cosgrave will now serve a lengthy prison term.”

A Message to Survivors

“This sentence sends a clear message to anyone who has suffered sexual assault or rape that we take all reports seriously, no matter how long ago the crime occurred,” the officers added.

“We work hard to support victims, bring offenders to justice, and partner with specialist agencies to provide help to those in need.”

Anyone affected by sexual assault is urged to contact police on 101 to speak confidentially with a trained officer. Those uncomfortable speaking with the police can find help through independent support organisations.
