Massive Blaze Hits Newham Shops and Flats
Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters raced to a major fire on Sherrard Road, Newham. The blaze started in a mid-terraced shop with flats above but quickly spread to four neighbouring shops and two flats above them.
Ground and First Floors Devastated
The fire badly damaged the ground floors of all affected properties and two first-floor flats. About 26 residents evacuated before the fire crews arrived. One man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters Battle Complex Blaze Through the Night
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The fire spread through several old shop premises and was difficult to control due to it spreading in different directions.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus for searches and aerial appliances to monitor the fire from above. They even deployed a drone for a better view of the blaze. Crews stayed on scene throughout the night and into the next day to keep the fire dampened down.
Fire Under Control After Nearly 5 Hours
The fire was reported at 10.24pm and brought under control by 3.06am. Fire stations from Stratford, Leytonstone, Plaistow, East Ham, Ilford, Barking, Dagenham, Walthamstow, Millwall, Homerton, Stoke Newington, Whitechapel, and Leyton all sent crews to tackle the blaze.
The London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police Service are investigating the cause of the fire.
