York Man Jailed for Hammer Attack That Nearly Maimed Woman

David Andrew White, from Chapelfields Road, York, has been sentenced after a brutal assault that left his victim needing surgery. White pleaded guilty to wounding but denied wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The jury found him not guilty of the more serious charge.

18 Months Behind Bars and 10-Year Restraining Order

White was handed 18 months in prison, serving at least nine months before release on license. On top of that, a 10-year restraining order was issued to protect his victim.

Bloody Hammer Attack Sparks 999 Call

Shortly after 1:30am on November 4, 2022, police received an urgent 999 call from a York shop. A blood-covered White had walked in, claiming he and the victim had hit each other over the head with a hammer. He said he was heading back to check on the victim.

At the property, officers found White with minor cuts, but the victim was badly injured, clutching her face to stem heavy bleeding from a deep gash on her nose. She confirmed White caused the injury and needed an operation to repair the damage.

Victim Breaks Silence: Glass Attack in Child’s Bedroom

The victim told police she and White had been out before returning home where White turned verbally abusive. He trashed her property, and when she fled to her child’s room, White followed. After she refused his request for a cigarette, he smashed a pint glass in her face. The resulting injury left her needing surgery.

Judge Simon Hickey said after the verdict: “I don’t believe for a moment this woman would start smashing up her own furniture and her own flat. I just don’t find that credible.”

Lead Investigator Speaks Out

Anne Yates, from North Yorkshire Police’s York Investigation Hub, said:

“The victim had to undergo surgery to help rebuild her nose.”

“This isn’t just physical; the mental impact has been huge.”

“I hope the court’s verdict brings some closure and ensures White can’t harm her again.”
