Wheelie Wreckless Biker Banned After Caught Showing Off
Ben Hawkins was pulled over on the A27 between Fontwell and Tangmere after flashing a “wheelie” right in front of an unmarked police car. Riding at speeds over 70 mph, he openly admitted he was just showing off to his mates.
Warning Ignored – Repeat Dangerous Driving!
Hawkins was reported for dangerous driving and warned his bike would be seized if he offended again. But just a week later, on February 5, officers from the Roads Policing Unit spotted him on the A281 at Henfield attempting a risky overtake across solid double white lines. When questioned, Hawkins confessed he “cannot control himself” when he rides.
Banned for 18 Months and Facing Tough Sentence
The 25-year-old from Hatherleigh Gardens, Bognor, appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on June 1, where he admitted dangerous driving and lack of due care. He was handed an eight-week suspended prison sentence alongside 150 hours of unpaid work.
Hawkins was slapped with an 18-month driving ban and must pass an extended retest before getting behind the wheel again. He also faces an £85 victim surcharge plus £85 in court costs. Following the initial police seizure, Hawkins agreed to sell his motorcycle.
Police Crackdown on Dangerous Riders
“Each year, RPU officers take part in Operation Downsway over the summer to clamp down on anti-social and dangerous driving,” said officer Tom Van Der Wee. “We aim to cut deaths and serious injuries caused by the ‘fatal five’: speeding, drunk or drugged driving, no seatbelt, distracted driving, and careless behaviour.”
“This case shows offenders that police will seize and forfeit vehicles if laws are broken. Hawkins has now lost control and will be off the roads for 18 months. We’re determined to catch those who risk their own and others’ lives.”
