Covid Cough Sparks Police Assault Charges

A 31-year-old man has been slapped with assault charges after allegedly coughing at a police officer and claiming he had Covid-19 symptoms. The shocking incident unfolded during a disturbance in Canterbury.

Disturbance Turns Dangerous

Kent Police were called to St George’s Lane, Canterbury, at around 11:30am on Tuesday 21 April 2020. David Jones, who has no fixed address, is accused of coughing directly into an officer’s face. That’s just the start — he allegedly also kicked two other officers.

Serious Charges and Court Dates

  • Three counts of assaulting emergency workers
  • One public order offence

Jones appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 22 April. He’s been remanded in custody and is set to return to court on Friday 1 May.
