Drunken Rage Ends in Brutal Razor Attack
Geoffrey Ryan, 53, sparked chaos at The Lounge in Market Square on September 9, 2022. What started as a casual drink turned into a night of violence and terror.
From Boozy Banter to Violent Outburst
- Ryan arrived around 4pm, seemingly calm at first.
- His behaviour quickly degraded as he continued drinking, disturbing other patrons.
- Security arrived at 9pm, only to face immediate verbal abuse from Ryan.
- By 9.30pm, staff warned Ryan after he harassed a group of customers.
- Ignoring warnings, he threw a drink and tried to assault door staff.
- Despite being kicked out, Ryan flicked a cigarette and threatened to kill a victim before leaving.
Razor Attack Shocks Town Centre
Less than two hours later, Ryan returned hooded, parked near Sainsbury’s in a parent-and-baby spot, and stormed back into The Lounge. Without warning, he slashed the victim’s neck with a razor.
The wound was shocking and life-threatening, needing urgent medical treatment to save the victim’s life. Thanks to speedy emergency response and public bravery—Ryan was detained on the spot.
Police found the blade in a bush near where Ryan had been lying. He was immediately arrested.
Justice on the Horizon
Ryan, from Brick Kiln Way, Braintree, faces charges of attempted murder and racially aggravated harassment. His plea to a lesser charge of grievous bodily harm was rejected due to clear intent to kill.
He denied all charges but was found guilty after a week-long Chelmsford Crown Court trial. Sentencing is set for April 5.
Detective Inspector Lydia George said: “It is no exaggeration to say this could have been a murder investigation. Ryan showed clear intent to kill; there is no doubt this was attempted murder. The victim’s life was saved by the quick action of officers and medics—the wound was millimetres from being fatal. Ryan is clearly a dangerous individual who will face a long custodial sentence.”
