Paedophile Joao Francisco Caught After Fleeing Court
Joao Francisco, 44, a drifter with no fixed address, was convicted at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, 7 December. He faces sentencing in January 2021.
16-Year-Old Victim Speaks Out
Police were alerted after a 16-year-old girl reported sexual abuse dating back to October 2017. Francisco had already been charged in June 2019 for sexual activity with a child but skipped his court hearing in July 2019.
Police Hunt Ends After Public Tips
An extensive manhunt kicked off, including a public media appeal in October 2019. The break came when members of the public tipped off officers. Eventually, Francisco turned himself in January 2020 after spotting his own details online.
Detective Praises Public and Victim
“I am glad that Francisco has been convicted and I hope it provides some comfort to the young victim, who has shown a lot of strength throughout the process,” said Detective Sergeant Jasmine Abbey from the East Area Command Unit.
“I urge anyone suffering sexual abuse to come forward. Trained officers are ready to help and investigate. Please don’t suffer in silence.”
Abbey also thanked everyone who contacted police after the media appeal. “This case shows how vital the partnership between police and the public is when chasing down offenders.”
