Obsession Turns Violent: Ipswich Man Jailed for Stabbing Attack
Alexander Cornell, 27, from Ipswich’s Britannia Road, has been locked up for 20 years after stabbing a man in a brutal attack. He was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday, 9 March, with an additional five years on extended licence.
Brutal Stabbing at Parkway Car Park
The violent assault unfolded just before 2.30pm on 4 July last year in the Parkway multi-storey car park. The 41-year-old victim suffered three stab wounds to his back and neck, including a deep three-inch cut causing muscle damage. Emergency services rushed him to West Suffolk Hospital. Cornell was arrested the same day and charged following questioning at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.
Dangerous Obsession Sparks Attack
Court heard that Cornell had become dangerously obsessed with the victim’s partner, a 39-year-old woman. The pair worked together for five years. Despite her repeated rejections, Cornell showered her with gifts and stalked her, even following her to three different gyms without invitation. She made it clear there was no chance of a relationship.
Police Praise Team Effort in Securing Justice
Detective Constable Guy Mitchell said: “Seeing Cornell behind bars for this lengthy sentence is extremely satisfying, especially given how fortunate the victim was not to suffer fatal injuries. This was an extremely nasty, violent and premeditated attack.”
“Thanks go to the victim and all the officers who attended the scene and made the arrest. The prosecution’s success was a true team effort, with Digital Support Officers reviewing hours of CCTV and forensic teams preparing key evidence,” he added.
Judge Levett also lauded the police investigation during sentencing, highlighting the meticulous work that brought Cornell to justice.
