Man Jailed for 35 Years Over Murder of Pregnant Woman and Her Unborn Baby
Aaron McKenzie, 26, has been locked up for 35 years after murdering pregnant Kelly-Mary Fauvrelle and causing the death of her unborn son in shocking Peckham killing.
Brutal Attack Stuns Thornton Heath Neighbours
On the early morning of 29 June 2019, paramedics were called to a home on Raymead Avenue, Thornton Heath. Kelly-Mary, eight months pregnant, was found with 21 stab wounds in her bedroom. Despite desperate efforts by London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance crews, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her baby boy, named Riley by the family, was delivered on site but sadly died days later in hospital.
The attack happened while the family were asleep upstairs. Kelly’s sister, alerted by screams, found her dying in the bedroom prepared for the baby’s arrival.
Cunning Killer Tried to Cover His Tracks
McKenzie, Kelly’s ex, changed his plea from guilty to not guilty and went on trial at the Old Bailey. CCTV showed him near the property at 3.15am, arriving before the attack, then fleeing 10 minutes later. There was no forced entry into the home, with police believing McKenzie entered via the patio doors.
He initially pretended to be a grieving partner, even attending hospital where Riley was fighting for life and joining Kelly’s family in mourning. But police arrested him on 11 July 2019. Through his solicitor, McKenzie admitted responsibility, saying: “No one else was involved in this. There was no reason for it other than my faults.”
Justice Served After Harrowing Trial
After psychiatric evaluations, McKenzie reversed his plea again, claiming pressure during his admissions and naming a mysterious new suspect with no proof. The jury convicted him of murder, manslaughter, and possession of an offensive weapon on 10 July.
McKenzie was sentenced on 17 July to 35 years for murder, 20 years for manslaughter, and 3 years for weapon possession, all served concurrently.
Detective Chief Inspector Mick Norman said: “This has been a harrowing and distressing case. Kelly-Mary’s family have suffered immeasurable loss. Their future with Kelly-Mary and Riley was cruelly taken from them, and today McKenzie’s future has been taken away. “This is justice, but it will never undo the devastation caused. We hope the sentence offers the family some comfort.”
