BMW Driver’s Daredevil Overtake Ends in Horror Crash
Sean Dray’s high-speed antics on Walton Road turned ugly on the night of Saturday 23 July 2022. Zooming along at 10.30pm in his BMW X5, Dray tried a risky overtake on a blind bend. The single carriageway proved no place for such a stunt as he smashed into a taxi carrying four passengers further up the road.
Taxi Spins Out and Crashes Into Tree
The vicious rear-end collision launched the taxi, a Toyota Avensis, out of control. It spun wildly before slamming into a roadside tree. Meanwhile, Dray’s BMW careered into the wall of a nearby house.
Emergency crews faced chaos upon arrival. Two passengers were trapped inside the mangled taxi, requiring team effort to extract them safely. Four taxi passengers suffered serious injuries in the smash.
Dray Arrested for Drink Driving, Refuses Blood Test
Police swooped on Sean Dray at the scene, arresting him on suspicion of drink driving. In custody, he shockingly refused to give a blood sample. When questioned, Dray admitted he’d tried to overtake the taxi but swerved onto the wrong side of the road to avoid oncoming traffic, causing the crash.
Three Years Behind Bars and Driving Ban
Dray, 30, of Knox Road, Clacton, faced justice swiftly. At chelmsford/" title="Chelmsford" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on 31 January, he pled guilty to four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. On 19 April at Chelmsford Crown Court, he was jailed for three years and banned from the roads for three and a half years.
Police Launch ‘Vision Zero’ Drive to End Road Tragedies
PC Danny Wheeler, lead investigator from the Roads Policing Unit, slammed the needless crash:
“The victims did not deserve what happened – it was entirely avoidable. Our team works tirelessly to keep Essex roads safe. We’re aiming for zero deaths and serious injuries by 2040, using targeted patrols and Operation Vision Zero days to tackle dangerous driving.”
