Brutal Post Office Robber Gets Six Years for Punching Staff and Ripping Off Till

Balaclava-Clad Thug Strikes in Broad Daylight

On February 12, 2022, Jon Pughe, 41, stormed a Post Office on Margate Road wearing a balaclava and wielding a crowbar. Around 5:15 p.m., he punched a staff member square in the face before ripping a large sum of cash from the till and making a run for it.

Quick Police Work Nets Fast Arrest

Police were on the scene fast, grabbing CCTV footage showing Pughe’s getaway in a white Renault van. Keen-eyed officers linked the van to him and launched patrols across Herne Bay. By 11:45 p.m. that same night, Pughe was caught in the town centre and the van found dumped in Broomfield.

Irrefutable Evidence Seals the Deal

  • The jeans Pughe wore at arrest had a tear matching the robber’s pants from CCTV footage.
  • This forensic detail helped leave him no choice but to admit the robbery charge.

“Pughe’s violent actions were terrifying for the victim of this robbery, who was simply doing her job serving the local community,” said Detective Chief Inspector Keith Taylor. “Thanks to the officers’ swift response and thorough investigation, justice was served swiftly.”

Sentenced to Six Years Behind Bars

On June 9, Canterbury Crown Court handed down a tough sentence. Pughe, of Clifftown Gardens, Herne Bay, was locked up for six years, sending a strong message that violent robberies won’t be tolerated.
