Knife-Wielding Attacker Tried to Rape Sex Worker in Marylebone Flat
Antonino Giagu, 58, of Fulham Palace Road, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, June 1. He had already admitted to attempted rape, causing serious injury, and possession of a bladed weapon.
Brutal Threat with Knife in Early Hours
On February 28, Giagu showed up at a Marylebone flat to meet a 22-year-old female sex worker. As soon as she opened the door, he forced her onto a bed and threatened her with a knife, demanding sex for free. He covered her mouth to stop her screaming for help.
Victim’s Quick Thinking Saves the Day
Terrified but resourceful, the victim managed to pick up her phone and accept a call, silently begging for help. Luckily, a 41-year-old friend arrived just in time. Giagu lunged at the man with the knife repeatedly but couldn’t land a blow.
The attacker was dragged out onto a stairway before vanishing. Police arrived shortly after the alarm was raised and arrested Giagu.
Justice Backed by Police and Detectives
Charged on March 17 and held in custody, Giagu now faces his sentence for the horrific attack. Detective Constable Lloyd Leech of the Westminster Rape and Serious Sexual Offenses Unit led the investigation.
“This was a horrific attack on a woman who was alone and vulnerable,”
DC Leech said. “Giagu’s bringing a knife clearly shows this was premeditated. The victim and her friend’s bravery prevented a worse outcome.”
DC Leech also stressed the issue of underreporting among sex workers:
“Assaults on sex workers are vastly underreported. They deserve justice like any other victim.”
“We encourage sex workers who suffer assault or crime to come forward. We treat everyone with dignity and respect. Specially trained officers are ready to help.”
