Predator Caught After Trying to Snatch 11-Year-Old Girl at Bus Stop
Ben Hanger, 31, from Sheerness, tried to kidnap an 11-year-old girl near a bus stop on Halfway Road at 7.30am on Thursday, 21 January 2021. The man, sitting in a blue car, leapt out and grabbed the girl’s wrist, whispering “come with me.” Luckily, she pushed him away and sprinted to safety.
Quick Thinking and CCTV Nail Suspect
The girl managed to reach a nearby relative and Kent Police were alerted immediately. CCTV footage caught Hanger walking back to his car right after the grab. Police arrested him at home the same day.
The next day, the victim picked Hanger out of an ID parade. He was charged with attempted kidnap, pleaded not guilty but was found guilty at Maidstone Crown Court.
Jail Time and Licence for Dangerous Offender
On 21 December 2022, Hanger was sentenced to 10 years behind bars, plus five years on licence after release. He also admitted to other crimes, including arranging a child sex offence and distributing child abuse images.
Detective Constable Ashleigh Carr: “Ben Hanger has proven himself to be a very dangerous man who poses a clear risk. The victim showed bravery by reporting the attack and helped ensure Hanger is off the streets for good.”
