Burglar Caught on CCTV Stole from Family Home as Child Slept Nearby
42 Months Behind Bars for Wandering Thief
Zachary Richardson, 25, with no fixed address, has been sentenced to 42 months in prison after a brazen break-in in Barrow.
Break-In in Barrow: Child in the Room During Theft
In December last year, Richardson slipped into an unsecured property in Barrow. He raided the living room, swiping electronics, a purse, and a wallet — all while a child was asleep on the sofa nearby. The family only discovered the theft the following day.
Failed Car Break and Taxi Card Fraud
The very next morning, Richardson tried to break into a vehicle parked on Harrison Street but was locked out. Undeterred, he ordered a taxi from Church Street. He then attempted to pay with one of the stolen cards, but it was declined. He had to fork out cash instead.
Police Hunt Ends with CCTV Identification
Detectives traced Richardson thanks to CCTV footage from the taxi office.
“We know these offences are not just about the impact from loss of possessions; it is obvious people want to feel safe in their homes and any intrusion of their property can ruin this peace of mind,” said Sarah Knight.
“This was even more upsetting for the family as Richardson stole electronics and other items from their home as their child slept on the sofa in the same room.
“We take burglary offences extremely seriously.
“Those who carry out similar offences can expect to face a police investigation and prosecution.”
