Homeless Man Convicted for Murder of Vulnerable Victim in West Brompton

A 47-year-old homeless man has been found guilty of murdering a frail 55-year-old in a chilling West Brompton killing.

Mohammed Assri, with no fixed address, was convicted at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday, 7 September for the murder of James Dowdell. Sentencing is set for Friday, 20 November.

Brutal Attack and Deception Exposed

The court heard that on 17 February, Assri made a desperate 999 call claiming he found James dead at St Mark’s Grove, SW10. Paramedics who rushed to the scene discovered James with severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead immediately.

Police arrested Assri, who was caught holding James’s bank card and a large sum of blood-stained cash. He had recently moved into James’s flat after being homeless.

Investigators revealed Assri quickly took control of James’s life, excluding carers and handling his finances. He regularly used James’s Halifax debit card and even pawned a valuable watch strap belonging to the victim.

Lies Crumble Under CCTV and Medical Evidence

  • Assri claimed he was at his sister’s house hours before James died and only returned later to perform CPR.
  • CCTV footage disproved his timeline, showing him near his sister’s home a full 12 hours earlier.
  • James’s pacemaker recorded a failing heart nearly two hours before the ambulance was called.
  • The post-mortem showed bruises and defensive wounds on James, confirming a violent attack.
  • Assri’s claim that injuries were self-inflicted or from a fall was shattered by pathologists.

Detective Slams ‘Violent and Manipulative’ Killer

“Assri is a violent and manipulative man who has taken no responsibility for his actions, using his court appearance to dishonour James’s memory,” said Detective Inspector Maria Green.

“I thank the witnesses for their courage and hope James’s family finds strength in seeing justice done.”
