Knife Attack Horror: Teen Stabbed in Broad Daylight in Eastbourne
Joseph Heavey, 32, has been slammed with an eight-and-a-half-year jail sentence after knifing a 15-year-old boy in a shocking attack on a busy Eastbourne street.
Violent Stabbing Followed Heated Argument
The drama unfolded on January 11, 2021, when the victim was visiting a friend in the same building as Heavey on Seaside, Eastbourne. A heated argument broke out inside the property before the youth fled outside—only to be chased down by Heavey.
CCTV caught Heavey returning inside to grab a knife before stabbing the teenager in his left arm. The victim fled and was quickly found by passing police, who rushed him to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for emergency surgery.
Heavey Caught Hiding Weapon, Sentenced to 11½ Years
Heavey tried to dispose of the knife by hiding it in an oven but was arrested and charged. Despite pleading not guilty, a jury found him guilty of wounding with intent in August 2021.
At Lewes Crown Court, Heavey—an unemployed local from Old London Road, Hastings—was sentenced to eight years and six months behind bars, plus a three-year extended licence. He was also slapped with a £190 victim surcharge.
Police Condemn Brutal Attack on Teen
“Heavey showed extreme levels of violence to inflict a serious injury on a boy who was aged just 15 at the time. He hasn’t accepted responsibility for his actions at any stage, despite hearing the distressing impact the assault continues to have on his victim,” said DC Glen Saunders.
“The victim is 17 years old now and should be out enjoying life with his friends. Instead, he struggles daily to overcome the physical and emotional trauma caused by this incident.”
“This was an attack that happened in broad daylight on a busy street in Eastbourne, and I know it also caused concern among the local community at the time.
“I hope this result reassures people that knife crime is taken incredibly seriously by police and the courts, and those who choose to carry and use a weapon will face lengthy sentences as a result.
“We’re pleased to see the judge reflect the seriousness of this offence by handing Heavey an extended 11-and-a-half year sentence.”
