Nigel Clayton Jailed for 30 Years Over Decades of Abuse

Nigel Clayton, 73, from Sutton Common Road, Sutton, was slammed with a 30-year prison sentence at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, 6 September. He was found guilty of 31 counts of sexual assault, rape, and possessing indecent images following a trial last May.

Horrific Crimes Spanning Four Decades

The vile offences involved seven male victims and stretched from 1976 right through to 2017. One victim suffered abuse at Clayton’s hands for more than 30 years. The assaults happened in various south London locations, including chillingly at a funeral. Clayton even converted a car garage office—he claimed to co-own—into a makeshift bedroom to carry out his attacks.

He lured victims with sly tactics such as offering money for odd jobs, handing out gifts, exploiting debts, making threats, and finally using physical force. Most victims were boys or young men, many without a father figure—something Clayton exploited to gain control.

Twisted Lies to Justify Sick Acts

Clayton deceived victims with fake credentials, claiming to be a doctor, an expert in child development, or involved in modelling, to manipulate and confuse them.

It wasn’t until 2016 that one brave victim stepped forward to report the abuse, sparking a police investigation by the South Area Safeguarding Unit. This led to the identification of seven more victims. Clayton was arrested in February 2020.

Detective Praises Victims’ Courage, Warns of Possible More Victims

“Clayton is a predatory and manipulative individual who specifically targeted victims he knew to be vulnerable,” said Detective Constable Candice Burley. “One victim was under his control for over 30 years, suffering regular sexual assaults. The long-term impact is unimaginable.”

“I extend my utmost respect and thanks to all the victims for their courage in coming forward and helping bring Clayton to justice.”

“There may be more victims out there. I urge anyone with information to come forward. You will be supported by trained officers committed to pursuing justice in sexual offence cases.”
