Hero Dad Left Fighting for Life After Savage Dog Attack

Vic Franklin, 77, suffered horrific injuries in Bognor Regis on 18 August. The attack left him with life-changing wounds.

Now recovering in hospital after multiple surgeries, Vic is full of gratitude for the emergency heroes who saved his life.

“Simply put, I wouldn’t be here without the assistance of our emergency service workers,” Vic said. “From the first responders including police and paramedics, to the air ambulance crew and the selfless staff at Royal Sussex County Hospital, I am eternally grateful.”

Firearms Fired to Stop Dogs on Rampage

After numerous 999 calls from alarmed locals, specialist firearms officers raced to Lewes Close. They were authorised to bring the dogs under control.

Shots were fired, and both dogs were confirmed dead at the scene.

Family Praise Vic’s Courage and Spirit

Vic’s son, Lee, spoke for the family, describing their heartbreak and admiration.

“We were completely devastated when we heard what happened. Dad has been the glue holding us all together,” Lee said.

“We feared the worst after his left leg, right arm and left middle finger were amputated. But Vic is an inspiration. He still makes us laugh.

“The first thing he said after surgery was ‘Everyone is safe now’. His thoughts were for others, not himself. To us, he’s a true hero.”

Investigation Ongoing, Eyewitnesses Urged to Come Forward

The dogs’ owner, a 29-year-old man from Bognor Regis, was arrested for being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control. He is on conditional bail until 16 November.

Police continue their inquiry and urge anyone with information to contact them via 101, quoting Op Byfleet.
