Drunk Man Admits Kidnap Attempts in Herringthorpe Horror
Shamaz Ali, 30, faced Sheffield Crown Court today, expected to start his trial for a series of shocking attacks last September. Instead, he threw in the towel, pleading guilty to eight crimes.
Eight Charges Landed on Ali
- Six counts of attempted kidnap
- One count of assault with intent to resist lawful apprehension
- One count of driving over the legal alcohol limit
On the morning of September 24, police were swamped with calls reporting a man in a car stopping to speak to people and children around Herringthorpe. Some victims were school students, and witnesses described Ali as visibly drunk.
Drunk Behind the Wheel
Ali blew well over the legal limit—45 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath, when the legal ceiling is 35.
Judge Paul Thomas QC found the case “very odd” and ordered a pre-sentence report. Ali was sent back to custody, with sentencing set for April 19.
