Driver Caught and Jailed for Flouting the Law Twice Over

Charlie Gunning, 27, from Royal Wootton Bassett, has been slammed with a four-month prison sentence after he was caught driving whilst disqualified – and without insurance. The recklessly illegal joyride ended in Swindon Magistrate’s Court last Friday, November 27.

Hit and Run After Police Chase

It all kicked off in the early hours of Thursday, September 3, when officers spotted Gunning behind the wheel of a BMW on London Road. The car’s MOT had expired, and its insurance coverage suspiciously only applied to female drivers.

When cops pulled him over, Gunning bolted. A foot chase ensued, but he managed to give the officers the slip – for now.

Public Tip-Off Leads to Arrest

Gunning’s freedom didn’t last long. A member of the public recognised him after a wanted appeal and tipped off the police. He was nabbed on November 26, nearly three months after his attempted escape.

Police Praise Public Help, Demand Road Safety

“Driving whilst disqualified not only shows a complete disregard for the law and the judicial system but also is incredibly dangerous for fellow road users,” said PC Luke Hobbs.

“This is not the first time this has happened, so I’m pleased that Gunning has been given a custodial sentence to reflect the serious nature of his actions.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the member of the public who contacted us after a wanted appeal was put out for Gunning. The support of the public is incredibly important and was part of the reason we were able to get such a swift result in this case.

“We are fully committed to ensuring our roads are kept safe and these types of crimes are put before the courts to ensure we don’t have any unnecessary loss of life on the roads.”
