Shaved-Head Thief Nabbed After Brazen Lye Street Robbery
Police swiftly caught a nasty street robber in Lye after releasing his photo. Within hours, tip-offs helped identify Shoaib Iqbal – even though he’d shaved his head to dodge detection.
Victim Targeted After Withdrawing Cash
Shoaib Iqbal, 20, stalked a 65-year-old man who’d just taken cash from Lye post office on 9 March. Iqbal followed him into an alley off Chapel Street, yanked him to the ground, and ripped the wallet straight from his pocket.
The victim escaped with just bumps and bruises but was left shaken by the ordeal. Iqbal stole £200 and fled the scene.
Shaved Head & Social Media Slip-Up Spells Doom
Officers tracked Iqbal to his Belmont Road home, finding him hiding upstairs. Despite shaving his bushy hair, he couldn’t run from justice. Messages on his phone from friends called him “famous” and flagged him as wanted all over Facebook. He’d even sent a pal a photo of his new look.
Despite all this, Iqbal showed no remorse in his chats or during police interviews.
Three Years Behind Bars for Ruthless Robber
Iqbal pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to three years at Birmingham Crown Court on 13 January. DC Neil Payton said:
“This was a really nasty street robbery by a man who then tried to change his appearance to evade justice. But with the help of the public, Iqbal, who had no previous convictions, is now behind bars. We hope this result brings comfort to his victim and shows that crimes like this lead to jail time.”
