Off-Duty Cop Caught Out: PC Maskell Guilty of Assault and Abuse
Off-Duty Officer Goes Rogue in Early Morning Row
PC Stephen Maskell, 44, from the North East Command Unit, was found guilty at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 17 June. The charges? Assault by beating and using threatening, abusive, and insulting behaviour likely to cause harassment and distress.
The shocking incident happened in the early hours of 5 July 2020 on Charlton Road, NW10.
Maskell Detains Innocent Bystander Without Cause
A concerned local heard a disturbance and went outside to check. Instead of help, they were grabbed and detained by Maskell, who was off duty but claimed police authority. Despite no lawful grounds, Maskell shouted he was detaining the man for a search.
His behaviour quickly turned aggressive and abusive, not just to the victim but also to another resident who stepped outside to see what was going on.
Intoxicated and Out of Control
When officers arrived, Maskell was found heavily intoxicated. He was arrested and charged in August 2020.
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards was alerted, and Maskell was placed on restricted duties. Misconduct proceedings will follow once the criminal case concludes.
Sentencing Looms and Police Boss Speaks Out
Maskell will face sentencing at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 July.
“The high standards we expect from our officers apply equally when they are off duty,” said Superintendent Waheed Khan, North East Leadership and Support. “PC Maskell’s actions on this night were unacceptable. Misconduct proceedings will now take place following the conclusion of criminal proceedings.”
