Cop PC Mathew Cooper Pleads Guilty to Abuse Charges
PC Mathew Cooper, attached to the Central West Command Unit, admitted to controlling and coercive behaviour without violence on Monday, June 20, at Aldersgate House.
A second charge of controlling and coercive behaviour involving violence is set to follow.
From Trainee to Troubled Officer
Cooper was in training when the offences happened. He was arrested at home on December 9, 2020. Taken to a police station, he refused to answer questions.
He was placed on restricted duty and charged via postal requisition on June 7, 2020.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
“I commend the victim’s strength and courage in reporting this officer’s behaviour and supporting the investigation,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Owain Richards, head of policing in Central West.
He urged all victims of domestic abuse—physical or psychological—to come forward. “We have specially trained officers to listen and guide them through the legal process.”
Cooper was off duty when the abuse occurred, but police stress this doesn’t lessen the seriousness of his actions.
Met Police to Crack Down on Misconduct
“Being a Met officer is a privilege,” Richards added. “We expect the highest professional and personal standards. Offenders will be investigated and face consequences.”
Cooper faces sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on August 31. A misconduct hearing is set to follow promptly after his court admission.
