Met Police Officer Found Guilty of Encouraging Dishonesty Over Speeding Charge
PC Richard Hammond, 35, from Met Operations, was found guilty at the Royal Courts of Justice on Tuesday, 7 September. The officer will be sentenced on Friday, 17 September at the same court.
Serious Charges After 2018 Speeding Incident
Hammond was charged on 11 December 2020 after an investigation revealed he sent messages urging someone else to lie about a notice of intended prosecution linked to a speeding offence in August 2018.
Senior Cop Condemns Officer’s Actions
Chief Superintendent Andy Walker slammed Hammond’s conduct, saying: PC Hammond attempted to persuade another person to lie on his behalf, behaviour which is completely unacceptable and undermines confidence in our organisation.
Perverting the course of justice is an extremely serious crime and we will take robust action against officers who fall short of the high standards we expect.
Walker added that police misconduct proceedings will follow now that the criminal trial has concluded.
