Brave Passer-by Stops Chatham Rape Horror
Aurel Birlan, 44, unleashed a brutal assault on his victim for nearly two hours. The nightmare only ended when a courageous passer-by stepped in.
Shocking Ordeal Unfolded in Early Hours
The savage attack took place on a December morning in 2021. Birlan met the victim and another man in a public spot. When the witness found the victim undressed, motionless, and injured, he confronted Birlan. After demanding answers, he dialled 911 and stayed with both until police arrived.
Caught Red-Handed and Sent Down for Life
- Birlan was arrested on the spot in Chatham, Watts Street.
- North Kent Phoenix team pieced together CCTV footage showing the victim’s desperate pleas.
- Victim was unconscious for over an hour during the repeated assaults.
Birlan faced two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court and was hit with a life sentence on June 14, 2022. He must serve at least eight years and three months before parole. Birlan is now on the sex offenders’ register for life and barred from contacting the victim by a restraining order.
Police Praise Victim and Heroic Witness
“‘Birlan subjected his victim to a prolonged and truly harrowing ordeal, only stopping when a passer-by bravely intervened,’ said Detective Sergeant Kendal Moore.
“‘The victim has shown great dignity and bravery throughout. Thanks to today’s sentence, she can hopefully live a normal life now that this dangerous man is behind bars.'”
“‘I’d also like to thank the member of the public who confronted Birlan. His quick action was vital in stopping the attack and protecting the victim from further harm.’
