Care worker caught stealing from vulnerable patient avoids jail—but watch on!
Ex-carer nabbed for theft from vulnerable patient
Owen Jamie Michael Osborn, 30, from Southampton, was handed a 14-month jail sentence today at Southampton Crown Court. But the sentence was suspended for 18 months, meaning he avoids immediate prison time.
He abused trust to steal cash
Osborn once worked as a carer in Southampton during 2022. After quitting the job, he kept hold of his ID, uniform, and sensitive access codes to patients’ homes. On May 12, 2022, dressed in his old uniform and flashing his ID badge, he broke into the home of a vulnerable, housebound former patient.
He provided care before swiping £250 from the victim’s new bank card at a cash machine in Shirley.
Police praised, victim left shaken
The defence barrister lauded Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Operation Hawk team for their sharp and thorough investigation. The judge, His Honour Judge Forester, also commended the officers’ work.
Steve Hortin of Operation Hawk said: “Osborn’s actions, though his first offence, have seriously impacted his victim. He betrayed a vulnerable person’s trust. While he won’t go to jail now, he’s convicted and will be monitored closely for any breaches of his suspended sentence or further crimes.”
He added: “We are committed to protecting the public and will relentlessly pursue criminals who harm our communities.”
