Speed Demon Driver Mows Down Teen in 70mph Police Chase

Kwame McKenzie was caught driving over twice the speed limit before smashing into 15-year-old Danae Mills-Beresford. The reckless driver hit speeds over 70mph after refusing to stop for police, leaving Danae seriously injured and life forever changed.

Teen Thrown 16 Metres on Impact

As McKenzie sped through a busy junction in Basford, he struck Danae with terrifying force, sending her flying 16 metres along the road. The now 16-year-old was thrown into the air and dragged down the street.

Danae’s mum, Kelly Mills, said: “My daughter has suffered so much because of this collision. Time in hospital, away from family and friends, was so hard. She’s in constant pain she must live with for life.”

“One foot has lost all feeling and won’t recover. She has to wear a splint forever. She’s struggling emotionally and needs counselling. All this pain and suffering is because of the driver. I’m relieved he’s finally facing justice.”

Breathtaking Police Chase Ends in Tree Crash and Foot Escape

McKenzie was spotted driving erratically along the A610 Nuthall Road on October 29, 2019. Police pursued him for more than two miles. During the chase, he even mounted the pavement at speed, dodging traffic.

After hitting Danae at an estimated 69mph, damaging his untaxed Vauxhall Astra, McKenzie didn’t stop. He drove over a mile before losing control in Bell’s Lane and smashing into a tree. The 22-year-old then fled on foot, scrambling over walls and fences.

In his panic, he discarded his jacket and mobile phone, which helped police prove he was behind the wheel.

Justice Served at Nottingham Crown Court

McKenzie handed himself in four days later. He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop. Today at Nottingham Crown Court, he was jailed for two years and banned from driving for three.

“His victim could have been killed and now faces lifelong physical and emotional scars,” said Case Investigator Louise Melbourne from Nottinghamshire Police. “This was an appalling display of callous driving with zero regard for a young girl’s life.”

An independent police watchdog investigation confirmed officers acted appropriately during the pursuit and crash response.
