Brutal Baton Attack in Retford Ends with Jail Time

Man Chased and Hit with Police-Style Baton

Ryan Wilkinson, 27, went on a violent rampage in Chaplegate, Retford, on the morning of 12 May 2020. He chased down a man in his 40s and struck him with a police-style baton. The victim managed to fight him off despite Wilkinson’s accomplice attempting a knife attack.

Victim Escapes with Minor Injuries

Miraculously, the intended victim escaped with only minor injuries. The horrifying assault was partially caught on CCTV and witnessed by passers-by, making the attack all the more chilling.

Wilkinson Jailed for 27 Months

Wilkinson kept quiet during his police interview but later pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm without intent. He also admitted two charges of criminal damage alongside breaching a suspended prison sentence and a conditional discharge order.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, 21 March, Wilkinson was locked up for 27 months. His accomplice, Colin Fairweather, 27, who also admitted attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, awaits sentencing on 29 April.

Police Praise Victim’s Bravery and Issue Warning

“This was a violent and sustained assault on a victim who was fortunate not to sustain more serious injuries,” said Detective Constable Mathew Jones of Nottinghamshire Police.

“This attack could very easily have had far more serious consequences for everyone involved and I am pleased that Wilkinson has now been jailed for his part in it. I hope this sentence will serve as a clear warning to other violent offenders that this kind of behaviour will always bring about a very strong police response.”
