Detective Sergeant Found Guilty of Assault in Shocking Off-Duty Incident
DS Gareth Greenwood Convicted
Detective Sergeant Gareth Greenwood, 42, from Bradford, has been found guilty of two counts of common assault. The offences took place off duty in Baildon on 29 April 2022. At the time, Greenwood was serving as a temporary Detective Inspector.
Swift Justice and Suspension
Greenwood was immediately suspended once the investigation began. Today, he was handed an 18-month conditional discharge. On top of this, he must pay £625 in prosecution costs and a £22 victim surcharge.
Police Tough on Their Own
Detective Chief Superintendent Nicola Bryar of West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Directorate said: “This was an evidence-led prosecution and shows our commitment to tackling police misconduct. We acted quickly to suspend DS Greenwood after learning about his offending. Misconduct proceedings will now follow.”
She added: “This officer’s actions do not represent the vast majority of our workforce who work tirelessly to protect vulnerable people from harm.”
Call to Action Against Domestic Abuse
DS Bryar urged victims to come forward: “If you have suffered domestic abuse, whether the perpetrator is a police officer or not, please report it. If you’re worried about a family member, friend or colleague, contact us so we can help provide the support they need.”
