Child Cruelty Couple Slammed with Hefty Jail Terms After Appeal

In a shocking case of prolonged child abuse, Lorna and Christopher Dennington have had their prison sentences drastically increased after their original punishments were deemed “unduly lenient.”

From 12 Months to Years Behind Bars

Back in September, Teesside Crown Court handed both Lorna and Christopher Dennington 12-month jail terms for child cruelty. Christopher was also convicted of fraud. However, the Solicitor General referred their sentences to the Court of Appeal, which on November 17 upgraded Lorna’s sentence to four years and ten months, while Christopher now faces six years in prison.

Harrowing Details of Abuse

Lord Justice William Davis revealed the disturbing scale and duration of the abuse. It spanned many years, targeting three children in their care—one child suffered mistreatment from 2006 to 2017.

  • Lorna reportedly slapped the kids, punched one on the nose, and even battered another with a cupboard door.
  • On one appalling occasion, she dragged a girl by the hair down the stairs and scrubbed her skin harshly with a kitchen scrubbing pad for failing to wash properly.
  • In one horrific incident, a teenager was forced to pick up and eat her own vomit after being sick.

Fraud and Stolen Dreams

Christopher Dennington drained almost £58,000 from a child’s £59,000 trust fund left after the boy’s father died. The boy, now grown, said: “I am gutted that the money left to me after my father’s death is gone… They have taken away my dreams by stealing the money.”

Justice Served to the Cruel Couple

Both appeared remotely for the appeal hearing—Lorna from HMP Low Newton and Christopher from Holme House prison. The court acknowledged their mental health struggles and past trauma, including Lorna’s claim she was overwhelmed caring for multiple children.

But the judges slammed the initial sentence cuts for guilty pleas as “wholly unreasonable.” They stressed the cruelty was often witnessed by others, deepening the victims’ sense of hopelessness.

Lord Justice Davis said: “Each victim saw no escape from the dreadful home life to which they were exposed.”

Solicitor General Michael Tomlinson welcomed the tougher sentences, saying: “Christopher and Lorna Dennington both showed utter disregard for the welfare of the victims inflicting lasting and considerable harm on them. I welcome these increased sentences which better reflect the damage caused to these innocent lives.”
