70-Year-Old Southampton Man Plunges Into Water in New Forest Crash
On the evening of February 2, a 70-year-old driver from Southampton took a leisurely spin through the New Forest. But what started as a peaceful drive turned terrifying when he accidentally reversed his car down a boat launch and into the water.
Luckily, quick-thinking locals pulled him to safety and rushed him to hospital. The man was later diagnosed with vascular dementia, a condition causing sudden confusion and memory lapses. This progressive illness affects thousands each year, often impacting driving ability without warning.
Driver Gives Up Licence After Scary Accident
Following the incident, the man voluntarily surrendered his driving licence. Sergeant Nick Tucker issued a sober warning: “We all get older, and our eyesight and abilities deteriorate over time. Sometimes we don’t notice it ourselves.”
“If you have an elderly relative or friend who drives, talk openly with them. Encourage regular eyesight checks and medical consultations about their driving fitness.”
The Older Drivers Forum: Keeping Seniors Safe on the Road
The police team collaborates closely with The Older Drivers Forum, a non-profit made up of road safety experts, emergency services, charities, councils, and businesses. Their mission? To help mature drivers stay safe behind the wheel for as long as possible.
The Forum advises on things like:
- Voluntary driving assessments
- Adaptive equipment such as wing mirror adapters or elevated seats
- Guidance and confidence-building tools
Sergeant Hazlett stressed: “Many older drivers have invaluable experience, but aging affects vision, hearing, reaction, and judgement. Bad habits can sneak in unnoticed. Don’t wait for a scary near-miss or accident before rethinking your driving.”
Act Now Before It’s Too Late
Older drivers and their families are urged to seek advice and support early. Preventative action can save lives.
