Totton Man Caught Sexting Fake Child Online

Mark Anthony Mengham, 60, from Alfred Close, Totton, was sentenced today at Southampton Crown Court for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. The offences took place between December 2020 and January 2021 – but the “child” was actually a police sting, not a real person.

Explicit Messages Exchanged With Underage Decoy

The court heard Mengham sent numerous highly sexual messages over several weeks to someone he believed was just 13 years old. On January 15, 2021, he was arrested and charged with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to incite a female under 13 to take part in sexual activity, and trying to cause a 13-to-15-year-old to view sexual images.

Suspended Jail Time and Long-Term Orders

After pleading guilty, Mengham was handed a nine-month prison sentence – suspended for two years. He will also spend five years on the Sex Offenders Register and be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period. Additionally, he must complete 40 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days and pay court costs plus a victim surcharge.

Police Urge Vigilance Over Online Dangers

“In a world where people can easily exchange messages nationwide and beyond, it’s vital we investigate suspected offences properly,” said Detective Constable Paul Hills. “We aim to protect vulnerable youngsters from sexual exploitation. This conviction shows how seriously we take these crimes.”

“We want to warn parents that social media can hide dark dangers. What looks like innocent chat can quickly turn sexual.”

“If you or someone you know has been a victim of child sexual abuse, we urge you to come forward.”

Help and Advice for Parents and Victims

  • Check the apps and social media your children use, and set parental controls.
  • Remind kids that online ‘friends’ may not be who they claim.
  • If you suspect a child is at risk, speak to professionals or call 101.
  • In an emergency, dial 999 immediately.
