Drug Driver Who Killed Pedestrian Slapped With Harsher Jail Term
Rizwan Ali’s Deadly Crash
A reckless drug driver who fatally struck a pedestrian in Bolton has had his prison sentence beefed up after the Solicitor General stepped in.
Rizwan Ali, 26, stole a Range Rover using his brother’s driving licence on August 17, 2018. The very next day, after smoking cannabis and drinking at a friend’s wedding, Ali got behind the wheel.
Speeding Through Bolton
Ali smashed through Bolton at over 60mph in a 30mph zone. He failed to spot 65-year-old Colin Olawumi crossing the road until it was too late. Despite braking and swerving, Ali hit Colin, killing him instantly.
Justice Served: Sentence Increased
Ali was initially jailed for 3 years and 5 months in June 2020 at Bolton Crown Court. However, the Solicitor General, Rt Hon Michael Ellis QC MP, referred the case to the Court of Appeal. On October 8, the court ruled the original sentence too lenient and increased it to 5 years behind bars.
“Ali killed an innocent victim through his dangerous driving and deserves a longer sentence. I am glad the Court of Appeal has increased his sentence today and I hope this gives some closure to the victim’s family,” said Ellis after the hearing.
