Archie Battersbee: Court Rules to End Life Support in Heartbreaking Battle
From Hope to Heartache
On April 7, Archie Battersbee was found unconscious at his Essex home. Doctors soon declared him brain-stem dead. Despite this, his parents clung to hope, sparking a fierce legal battle over his fate.
High Court Gives Final Verdict
Last week, Mr Justice Hayden delivered a crushing blow to Archie’s family. He ruled that continuing life support was “futile” and “only protracts his death.” The judge called the case a “tragedy of unfathomable proportions.”
Parents Fight Back with Appeal
Archie’s mum, Hollie Dance, and dad, Paul Battersbee, vowed to challenge the ruling. They are set to appeal in the Court of Appeal this Thursday, desperate to overturn the decision to withdraw treatment. Ms Dance described the court’s decision as a “crushing blow.”
“In my opinion, the planned removal of the ventilator is the worst thing that could happen. I don’t see how this is dignified,” she said.
The Long Road to Court
- Archie was first declared brain-stem dead by a High Court judge in June.
- Mrs Justice Arbuthnot initially ruled Archie had died.
- The Court of Appeal allowed Archie’s parents to challenge that ruling, ordering fresh evidence to be reviewed.
- Now, the latest ruling again sides with doctors saying Archie has no chance of recovery.
The tragic case continues to spark nationwide debate over end-of-life care and the rights of families in life support battles.
