The Raid That Never Got Far
David George, 21, from Hatfield; Domingo Nsita, 29, from London; and Joshua Tiloye, 22, from Stevenage, pleaded guilty to robbing Justice Jewellers on Parchment Street, Winchester. The trio also admitted possessing an imitation firearm during the crime.
Winchester Crown Court handed down stiff sentences today: George and Tiloye each got 10 years, Ngita got 12 years. They each received an additional five years for carrying the fake gun, to run concurrently.
Swift Police Response Thwarts Robbery
On April 15, the gang arrived in a white van. Tiloye and George stormed inside wearing motorcycle helmets, threatening the shop owner with a gas-powered BB gun while stealing watches and jewellery worth around £200,000.
But members of the public quickly alerted police, who raced to the scene. Armed officers from Hampshire and Thames Valley Joint Operations Unit surrounded the shop, blocking all escape routes.
Nsita, waiting as the getaway driver, tried to flee but got stuck behind a bin lorry and was arrested on the spot. The two raiders inside fled but were soon caught thanks to tips from local witnesses.
Justice Served and Praise for Public Heroism
All stolen jewellery and weapons, including a hammer and face masks, were recovered. Detective Constable Darrin Carey praised the officers’ rapid action and the local community’s bravery. He said:
“Thanks to the swift actions of our officers, these dangerous men have been taken off the streets of Hampshire. Within minutes, our teams were ready to confront and block their escape, giving the offenders no chance.” “This joint effort between neighbourhood police and specialist units was brilliant. I also want to thank the brave members of the public who stayed to provide vital information that helped officers catch the suspects quickly.” “We hope this sends a strong message to anyone thinking of bringing crime to Hampshire or the Isle of Wight – we will act fast and take robust action.”
