Free e-Scooter Rides for Key Workers Launch on Isle of Wight

Key workers on the Isle of Wight can now enjoy free, eco-friendly rides thanks to the launch of the Beryl e-Scooter scheme. By downloading the free Beryl App and signing up with an NHS email plus UK driving licence details, NHS staff get their first 15 minutes completely free — a generous offer funded by Beryl.

Newport Gets First 25 e-Scooters, More to Follow

Starting today, 25 Beryl e-Scooters have hit the streets of Newport with easy hire and drop-off at marked Beryl Bays. Another 125 scooters are set to join the fleet in the next few weeks. This cautious rollout allows Beryl and Isle of Wight Council to track usage and tweak the scheme to fit local needs.

The scheme initially supports Isle of Wight NHS Trust workers, but will soon expand to Ryde and Cowes. Although open to the public, residents are urged to stick to essential journeys only, in line with government rules.

How to Ride and Pay

Getting on a Beryl e-Scooter couldn’t be simpler. The app guides users to unlock scooters, and a confirming chime ensures the scooter is locked when the ride ends. Scooters and Beryl Bays are easy to spot both in-app and on the street within the Isle of Wight’s operating zone.

  • Payment options: Pay-As-You-Ride at £1.50 unlock + 10p per minute, or Minute Bundles starting from just 5p per minute (100 mins for £5).
  • Fees: £10 charge if you park outside a Beryl Bay, £25 if locked outside the operating zone — covering the cost to return scooters for re-use.

Local Leaders Back the Green Initiative

“This is an excellent project and a welcome addition to sustainable travel on the Isle of Wight,” said Councillor Ian Ward, Isle of Wight Council’s transport cabinet member.

“Key workers keep the Island running during these tough times. This scheme supports NHS staff and offers an alternative to public transport or driving for environmental and cost reasons. There has never been a better time to try scootering!”

Philip Ellis, CEO of Beryl, added: “We’re excited to bring the first e-Scooter scheme to the South East, providing smart, flexible, and sustainable travel options. Supported by Isle of Wight Council and Solent Transport, we expect cleaner air, less congestion, and safer travel post-lockdown.”
