Masked gang terrorises family in early morning home invasion near Chatham
A terrifying home invasion rocked a Chatham family on September 8 last year. Four burglars armed with knives and wearing masks stormed the property near Luton Road at dawn. They roused the family, attacked one member, and made off with two watches and phones.
Crucial Evidence Leads to Arrests
Police found a mask at the scene containing DNA linked to 20-year-old Rogel Dumitru from Bexleyheath. Investigators uncovered Dumitru had travelled specifically from Bexleyheath to Chatham and was in contact with three accomplices: Ion Vasile, Denis Calin, and Robert Maytum. All four were arrested later that month.
Vasile, Maytum, and Dumitru pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary charges, while Calin was found guilty after trial.
Jail Terms Handed Down at Woolwich Crown Court
- Ion Vasile, 22, from Maidstone, was locked up for eight years and five months.
- Robert Maytum, 36, of Chatham, got seven years and two months.
- Denis Calin, 20, also from Chatham, was sentenced to seven years.
- Rogel Dumitru‘s sentence will be decided at a later date.
Police Praise Victims and Community
“This was a premeditated crime that terrorised a family in their own home,” said Detective Constable Dan Bister. “The threats with weapons left a lasting impact. Thanks to a meticulous investigation and courageous witnesses, these criminals are behind bars and Medway’s homes are safer.”
Community Breathes Sigh of Relief
The swift justice delivered has sent a strong message to criminals in the area. The successful police work and prosecutions have restored a vital sense of security for Chatham residents and those in neighbouring communities.
