Massive Bronze Lion Sculpture Stolen From Downs Exhibition

Between late Wednesday night and 8.30pm on Thursday, thieves struck at the Sea Walls section of the Downs, off Circular Road. They made off with a hefty 190kg bronze lion statue, part of the Born Free Foundation’s tribute to its founder, Bill Travers MBE.

Thieves Roll Up With Big Rig to Haul Away Statue

The sculpture was firmly nailed into the ground with metal pegs, making its theft a bold, planned job. Police believe a large vehicle and a team of people were needed to rip the statue free and cart it off.

Tribute Exhibition Targeted in Brazen Theft

The stolen lion was one of 25 life-size bronze statues featured in the ‘Born Free Forever’ exhibition. Launched to mark the 100th anniversary of Bill Travers’ birth, the display raises awareness and funds for the Forever Lions Fund in his memory.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Avon & Somerset Police are urging anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area or has information about the theft to come forward. Call them on 101 if you can help.
